Finished Hex Jam Nuts
Our finished hex jam nuts are machined to tighter tolerances than standard jam nuts, with a cleaner bearing surface and chamfered face for consistent seating. What is the difference between a jam nut and a standard hex nut?
A jam nut is machined thinner than a standard hex nut, typically about half the height, but shares the same width across the flats. Standard hex nuts carry the primary load in a connection; jam nuts thread against them to lock the assembly and stop it from backing off under vibration.
Should the jam nut go on top of or underneath the standard nut?
Best practice is to run the jam nut on first, snug it against the bearing surface, then thread the standard (thicker) nut on top and torque it to spec. This puts the full-height nut, which handles more load, in the primary position while the jam nut locks it in place.
What's the difference between a hex jam nut and a finished hex jam nut?
A finished hex jam nut is machined to tighter tolerances with a cleaner, chamfered bearing face for smoother seating and more consistent torque. A standard hex jam nut is built to the same dimensional spec but without the additional machining, making it a more economical choice for general-purpose locking applications.
