Types of Hex Nuts
Hex nuts share the same six-sided body, but the differences in height, finish, and grade decide where each one belongs. We supply the full range and produce custom configurations when a standard part will not seat or hold. The categories below cover the hex nuts we manufacture and stock most often.
Standard hex nuts are the general-purpose workhorse for machinery, equipment assembly, and everyday fastening. They pair with common bolt and rod sizes in both coarse and fine threads, and we run them in carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy material. For routine work, a standard hex nut in the correct grade and finish is all a joint needs.
Heavy hex nuts are taller and wider across the flats than standard nuts, which gives the threads more engagement and the joint more clamp load. They are the default for structural steel, anchor bolts, and high-strength connections. When a project calls for ASTM A194 2H, our custom heavy hex nuts and structural nuts are built for steel-to-steel connections in bridges, columns, and base plates.
A jam nut is a thinner hex nut used to lock a second nut in place or to set the position on a threaded rod. Run it against a standard nut, and the two wedge together, resisting loosening under vibration. Jam nuts also work as a low-clearance option where a full-height nut will not fit. For longer threaded-rod connections, our custom coupling nuts carry the load instead.
Finished hex nuts are machined to tighter tolerances and a cleaner surface than standard nuts, with chamfered bearing faces for smooth seating. They suit assemblies where appearance, fit, and consistent torque matter. We supply finished hex nuts across common sizes and grades, with plating or galvanizing applied to the job spec.

For corrosion protection, we apply zinc plating or perform hot-dip galvanizing in-house, so the coating is consistent across the lot and matched to the bolt it threads onto.

Common Applications for Hex Nuts
Hexagonal nuts hold together nearly everything bolted, from a guardrail post to a bridge girder. The application drives the grade and finish, not the other way around. We supply hex nuts for:

How to Choose the Right Hex Nut
Picking a hex nut comes down to four questions. Match the thread to the bolt, in size and pitch, so the parts engage cleanly. Match the grade so the nut is at least as strong as the fastener it threads onto. Pick the finish for the environment, plated for indoor work and galvanized for anything exposed to weather or moisture. Then choose the height: standard for general work, heavy for structural and high-load joints, jam for locking and low clearance.

What is the difference between a standard hex nut and a heavy hex nut?
